BEWARE OF PRIMERICA
So I was looking for a finance internship for the summer as I have one more year left in college. I wasn’t having too much success finding that financial job that I wanted until one day I got a call from a guy at Primerica Financial who wanted to interview about the possibility of filling a position there for the summer. I was ecstatic that all my opportunities were not run dry and arranged to meet for an interview. I found it very odd that right from the start; it didn’t seem like an interview at all. I was more like a sales pitch about the company to me. The guy could of cared less what was on my resume or what qualifications I had, he just wanted to make Primerica sound like I was hitting the jackpot, and was in the right place at the right time. When I tried to ask questions about what exactly I would be doing, he said he would go over all that on a later date. I could tell that he was trained very well in changing the subject and not answering questions I wanted to find out. To him it was all about being positive and how great I will do and how much money I will be making soon. He then pulled out a long contract, wanted me to sign it and give him $199. I was shocked when I saw this. Pretty much all legitimate businesses out there pay for every aspect of recruiting and background checks themselves, but this guy wanted me to give him $200 of my hard earned money without even knowing what the hell I’ll be doing!!! Being that idiot that I am, and knowing how much I needed a job for experience purposes, I pulled out my credit card. I then attended one of their Saturday training sessions a couple days later. It was one of the most awkward times in my life. And I totally see why people compare it to a cult sometimes. It just gives off that vibe. Everyone in the crowed kept shaking their heads up and down after everything the speakers on the podium said. The speakers continually bashed corporate America, our government, other investment companies and made it seem like Primerica is the only right way, everyone else is wrong. I totally felt like I was being brainwashed. They then went over their so called “secrets” like the rule of 72 and how compound interest worked and everyone in the crowed looked on in amazement like. Anyone with a college education would know that crap and I realized that most of the people in the crowd probably didn’t even have a college education. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but if I’m going to work for a financial service company, I don’t want it to be someone that picks up anyone off the street. The speakers at these meetings are great speakers with a lot of energy and are trained very well in luring you in. They taught us how to carefully word what we say to potential clients. Don’t ever tell them you’re from Primerica, delay answering any questions until you meet, and just tell them you need some help with your business. I couldn’t believe how shady this was starting to become. After that whole rant, I do think Primerica does good things. They help people learn how to get out of debt and become financially independent. Unfortunately, the actual financial planning part seems to be their last priority. They constantly want you to try and recruit your friends and family and their friends and their family and annoy the hell out of all of them. I think this company would be incredible if it was just set up in a more normal and business professional way, but it’s too caught up in its own mess of deception. I would not recommend working for this company at all; however, if you are looking to get out of debt or improving your finances, I think they do a good job.
