Understanding Your New Birth

In John 3:1-8, Jesus discusses one of the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith, which is to be born again. Without the new birth one cannot receive eternal life and salvation through Jesus Christ. When referring to salvation, people most often use the term "I'm Saved." According to the Greek dictionary the word saved means to set free. Upon the death of Jesus on the cross we all have the opportunity to be set free from the bondage of sin and death. However, not everyone will receive this freedom. To receive this freedom, each person will have to make a personal choice to accept Jesus as his or her personal savior, thus obtaining salvation.

The word salvation means to be set free from the PENALTY, POWER, PRESENT, and especially the PLEASURE of sin.

In this lesson we will discuss:
I. What it means to be born again?
II. Why we need to be born again?
III. What it takes to become born again?
IV. What we gain from becoming born again?

I. Being born again: What does it mean?
a) You _____ the Holy Spirit in your heart (Luke 11:13)
b) You are _____ to God through Jesus (2 Cor 5:17-18)
c) You're declared ______ through Jesus (Romans 5:19)

II. Why do we need to be born again?
a) Our _____ makeup is inherently sinful.(Romans 5:12)
b) We're all _____ of sin. (Romans 3:23)
c) We're not ____ to God because of sin.(Romans 8:7-8)

III. What does it take to become born again?
a) _____ that you're a sinner. (Romans 10:9)
b) _____ that Christ died for you. (Romans 5:8)
c) _____ your life to live for Christ. (Romans 12:1)

IV. What do you gain from becoming born again?
a) A complete change of _____. (Matt 15:19)
b) A complete change of _____. (2 Cor 5:17)
c) A complete change in _____. (2 Peter 1:4)

1. Describe what being born again means to you.

eternal life?
3. According to Romans 3:23, who needs salvation and why?
4. According to Romans 10:9-10, how did you obtain your
