Unfortunately the State of South Carolina did not start registering vital statistics on a statewide basis until 1915. Earlier records were kept by some of the larger cities, and are available from the county health department where the city is located. Charleston has microfilm copies of birth records available from the Family History Library, but they range from the years 1877 to 1901. Not much help in this case!

The Huguenots first came to South Carolina in 1670.
There is a Huguenot Society of South Carolina that was established in 1885. http://www.huguenotsociety.org/

There is a book called "The Huguenots of Colonial South Carolina" by Arthur Henry Hirsch which may be of interest to you. There are a few families listed, but I don't see any DuRettes. Here is a website that tells in detail about this book: http://www.genealogical.com/item_detail.asp?ID=9100&afid=1000

If you could find out what church they attended, you may be able to obtain records from there. Here is another site that may be helpful to you: http://www.kindredtrails.com/SC_Charleston.html

You may need to be satisfied with the "about" information you obtain from census records. In the earlier records, sometimes that's all that is available to us.

Good luck in your research. I hope I have been of some help to you.
Connie
