I agree with the first poster.
When I was competing, a bought a classic-styled red suit at Nordstrom. It was of their store label, wasn't of a trendy style and was expensive (I think around $200), but it has proved to be the best outfit I purchased for pageant and had the benefit of being able to be used after the pageant (so few things are). I wore it to several successful job interviews after I left the program. The classic styling compensated for the unconventional color.
Suits from the junior department may be fine, but if you're serious about winning, I've found it's really a good start to have a quality interview suit for pageant. I never won a local crown, but I aced most interviews. I can't credit that entirely to the suit, but it's elegant, of excellent quality and I always walk a little taller in it -- which surely gave me a confidence boost.
I highly suggest getting a suit like mine or picking from lines like Kasper. The Nordstrom selection has the bonus of being sold as separates, so you can get the blazer and skirt in two different sizes if you need. Kasper doesn't do that.
Evening gown is only 15% and you can get a lot of nice gowns for that and talent on the sale rack, but my advice? Don't scrimp on the interview suit.
Although it sounds preachy, here are some other things I learned for interview:
Don't wear a mid-thigh "Ally McBeal"-type skirt. Junior department skirts are often too short. Keep it slightly above the knee. Buy hose of a quality to match your suit and make sure your shoes don't have scuffs. Don't go heavy on the jewelry, but wear good earrings that complement, not clash with, your suit buttons. Dress as if you were a corporate climber and lay off the sparkly jewelry. Less is more in interview.
Good luck, ladies! That's my best advice, and I promise it works.
