In reply to: 's message, "Does anyone stop and think of the scholarship funds these women have earned? Some compete for that reason too." on 04:55:47 12/12/02 Thu

I'm glad to see more scholarships being offered, to runners-up and not just to winners. If you're not consistently winning crowns, this really isn't the best circuit for scholarship money because of the expense it takes to compete: Talent lessons, wardrobe, hair, makeup, time, etc. I don't think it's smart to compete in this program just to make money for your education, because of that. There are foundations that give scholarships to students for essays and talent that don't require near the expense -- simply an essay or audition.
Ladies, I know we've all said we do it for scholarships, but be careful not to put all your eggs in the MAO basket hoping for a payoff. Compare what you're spending to what you're getting in scholarships from the program. I say this knowing the MAO can be a real positive thing, but sometimes it's a better plan just to keep the money you make at a part-time job and invest it directly in your education instead of effectively giving it to the MAO hoping for a payoff. We'd all like to think we're going to place well or get a scholarship for doing our best, but it's so subjective: Different judges, different days, different competitors. Just because you work hard doesn't mean it's going to pay off here necessarily. Some of the most deserving never get a local crown. This program is a lottery ticket in many respects!
