Detroit ordered to pay brain-damaged teen $15M

DETROIT -- A Wayne County jury today awarded a 15-year-old boy $15 million after he was left with permanent brain damage after a city vehicle struck him as he was walking in a crosswalk.

The city had refused to accept a mediation settlement for $1 million.

"We felt this was a just, but compromised, verdict," said Jeffrey Danzig, who, along with Geoffrey Fieger, represented the teenager.

The attorneys for the boy had asked for as much as $40 million.

On Easter Sunday 2005, Dallas Tyus, then 11, and several friends were walking across McNichols when they were hit by a police department evidence technician.

According to court testimony, the technician was speeding at the time of the accident.

Tyus was in a coma for one month and was hospitalized for three months.

The trial lasted four weeks, and the jury deliberated for two days.

The city had no immediate comment, but normally jury awards are reviewed before they decide whether to appeal.
