Fieger case going to trial, judge rules

A federal judge today dismissed Southfield lawyer Geoffrey Fieger's claim that he is the victim of a politically-motivated prosecution in last year's indictment on charges that he illegally contributed $127,000 to John Edwards' 2004 presidential campaign.

U.S. District Judge Paul Borman denied Fieger's request to dismiss the indictment in a one-page order. Borman said the case will go to trial on April 14. He said he would issue an opinion at a later date.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lynn Helland declined to comment on the decision. There was no immediate comment from Fieger.

Fieger and partner Vernon (Ven) Johnson were indicted last August on charges that they illegally contributed to Edwards' campaign by reimbursing employees and vendors for money they gave to Edwards.

Fieger, a prominent Democrat, has said that state and federal investigations were politically-motivated and coordinated by the Bush Administration and Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, a Republican, who had ordered a review of possible state violations involving attack ads that Fieger financed against State Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman's 2004 reelection campaign. Cox never filed charges against Fieger.
