Ex-Kevorkian Lawyer to Run for Mich. AG 2 hours, 41 minutes ago

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - Geoffrey Fieger, the combative lawyer who gained fame defending assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian and ran for governor in 1998, said Tuesday he plans to enter the campaign next year for state attorney general.

The Democrat accused incumbent Mike Cox of blatant favoritism toward corporations.

"In just three short years, the Republican attorney general has put the office up for sale in a stench of cronyism with the sale and purchase of political favors," Fieger said.

Cox spokeswoman Allison Pierce defended the incumbent, saying that the office under Cox's leadership had just charged its 74th Internet child predator. "Attorney General Cox is continuing to protect Michigan children and consumers at a record rate," she said.

Fieger, 54, is known for his flamboyant courtroom style and outspokenness, notably during his years as Kevorkian's lawyer. The 77-year-old doctor claimed to have attended or assisted in more than 130 deaths and drew public attention to his cause, sparking a state ban on assisted suicide. Kevorkian was convicted in 1999 of second-degree murder; Fieger has said he wasn't asked to represent Kevorkian in that case.

Fieger said Tuesday that he hadn't discussed his bid for attorney general with Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, but he said, "I have been urged by people at the highest level to do this."

Earlier this year he had raised the possibility of challenging Granholm in next year's Democratic primary.

Michigan GOP chairman Saul Anuzis had a harsh assessment of Fieger: "He's a snake-oil salesman with a long history of putting himself before anything and anyone. Fieger is, and always has been, long on insults but short on actual ideas or results."
