Generally speaking, I get twice the life out of my front tire vs my rear.

Some road tires actually have wear indicators on them so you know when they are wearing out. I know when I start getting regular flats :)

For training, I ride Specialized Armadillos for two reasons:

They are virtually bulletbproof against all but the nastiest objects - and-

They weigh in at over 400 grams (double your average Continental tire), so after a few thousand miles on them my race wheels feel sooooo much faster its like they aren't there at all :)
