Subject: Gentle Ben Not So Nice

A beautiful day for a ride as the Yellow Train headed south to Westlake on their Tuesday night ride. The large group was in a frisky mood itching to test their legs after the weekend rain.

It was pretty much Groupo Compatto over the top of Fish Hook Hill as the group turned north and flew down Shady Shores drive. Tornado Tom punctured and a small breakaway group of Big Rick and the Cannibal were first into Shady Shores.

The group rode at a quick pace down Lakeshore Drive and a big sigh of relief was heard from Jacque the Ripper as the Col de Shady Shores was bypassed. Cowpattie Hill remained on the menu though.

Big Rick came to the front as is the norm and the Cannibal tucked in behind as the speed hit 22mph and continued to rise up Cowpattie Hill. A selection was made here and only four riders remained: The Flying Frenchman, Cannibal, Big Rick and the Boss.

Big Rick and the Cannibal took turns stretching the elastic pulling down Garza Lane at 25mph.

What is this? The group of four is joined by Tornado Tom and Gentle Ben. A quick tire change and detour by Tom has given him a chance to contend for the sprint points.

The group of six turns now onto Corinth Parkway two miles from glory. Tornado Tom roars to the front and the pace is at 25mph. This is getting nasty. Obviously Tom has decided to sacrifice himself for the group. 1 mile to the finish and the speed is 26mph.

The Cannibal can wait no longer and jumps. The man has lost his mind. Big Rick and Gentle Ben are quickly on the wheel. The Boss curses and is 10 meters back with Tornado on his wheel. The jump is sticking. 27, 28 mph and it hurts. Tornado Tom has blown and Scottie is chasing alone.

With 1/2 mile to the finish The Boss decides to buy a ticket as the group of three are clear.

The Cannibal is losing steam and Gentle Ben comes through and earns the hard fought victory. Big Rick takes second and The Cannibal finishes 3rd.

However, the victory by Gentle Ben has been protested by the peloton as Ben is riding with tri bars. This story is sure to receive intense media scrutiny throughout the Summer.

2007 CCC Summer Crit Standings:

Big Rick - 13 points
The Boss - 8 points
Dice - 4 points
Roland - 3 points
Gentle Ben - 3 points
Tornado Tom - 2 points
Gramps - 2 points
The Cannibal - 1 point

Note: 3 points for a win, 2 points for 2nd, 1 point for 3rd.
