I think perhaps one is past 2nd kosha when pranas are stilled. One passes manas kosha when manas is stilled. I thought the pranas, sense and manas were intertwined... There cant be much difference to still the pranas and manas. Now we exit astral body. One is in causal when in intellect kosha--still analyzing. That stilled will take us to bliss kosha---of causal body I think. I think the bliss is of feeling "I am a being of bliss". You are not dissolved in God but have causal idea "I am a jiva". You go past that kosha when that bliss fades. The bliss of God still must be greater.

Roy Davis is one person that is not much impressed with getting the breathless state. Ot at least he says it is no indicator of realization. No doubt Yogananda did say it was quite an accomplishment if not induced by glandular pressure and it is in fact the easiest way to check if someone is an adept at yoga. Otherwise you have to watch how he lives---time consuming.
