A century ago, Hankin (1896) reported that the waters of the Ganges and Jumna rivers in India had marked antibacterial action which could pass through a very fine porcelain filter; this activity was destroyed by boiling. He particularly studied the effects on Vibrio cholerae and suggested that the substance responsible was what kept cholera epidemics from being spread by ingestion of the water of these rivers. However, he did not further explore the phenomenon.
