Subject: Void and nihilism
In reply to: H - 15 Aug 2005 's message, "Your quotes are excellent, as always (n/t)" on 06:50:48 10/06/05 Thu

Once, I had a great deal of discussion with a very learned Lama on Shunyataa (VOID).

Before I was parting, he made an extra effort to talk to me. Since void is not anything, he forwarned me that "Be careful of void and its iomplication IF ONE IS NOT CAREFUL in understaning VOID. It can lead to nihilism"

So, I asked what is Nihilism?

So, he said "If one is not careful, it leads to nihilistic behavior. Meaning, as someone have mentioned of passivity towards the other living beings and their sufferring. Just like the non-dualist says that world is illusary and the sufferring of people is also illusary. One must not discount the pain and suffering of other living beings as it is very real to them. One cannot play the karma theory trump card either. That is when passivity sets in. One is not a seperate existance independent of the rest of the universe. OR the feeling that I have nothing to do with the rest of the world. I must liberate myself no matter what. Such callous attitude is a sign of nihilistic behavior. If Shunyataa (VOID) was nihilistic, Buddha would have not gone thru giving these teachings for over forty years until his very last breath. He was a true karma yogi"
