Some time after his death he appeared to one of his disciples in dream and triumphantly proclaimed that suffering goes on in the afterlife as well

Oh great!

I had never heard the reports of his wounds healing after death before.

One of the things I find most interesting about Padre Pio was the extraordinary about face by the Vatican. At one time Pio was regarded as a deranged fraud, even posessed by the devil. I have heard reports of the Vatican arranging for his confession box to be bugged in an attempt to expose him. It was claimed he had liasons with women in his cell. The wounds on his body were said to have been made by the deliberate application of nitric acid and the church banned him from taking mass.

The last pope was an admirer of Pio's as you say, and a friend of his was cured of throat cancer after he asked Pio to pray for her. Perhaps John Paul II had something to do with the reassesment of Pio, or perhaps it was simply the church bowing down to his popularity among the Italian faithful.

He also seems to have several instances of bilocation attributed to him.

One thing which can be said is that he was one of the best studied stigmatics ever, and the evidence does seem to suggest that something very unusual was happening to his body.
