The yogi does pranayama to gain control over prana. Prana is intelligent energy. The Self is energy (prana) and consciousness. As the underlying energy of the universe prana authors all other forces. Prana structures space and time. It is behind the atom, and gross thoughts.
As fine as atoms are, prana is solar systems finer. Similarly, the waves of thought are worlds finer than prana.
Prana is the stuff that fills in the spaces between atoms and gives space its dimension. The structure of a single atom contains worlds of pranic waves and innumerable thoughts.
Therefore mastery of prana in the body means to master the motions, the activities of the body/mind. This mastery of the little wave of prana opens the door for the yogi to unlimited prana, cosmic prana.
First you become aware of the breath, then the prana in the breath and then the Spirit within the prana. To master the single unit of energy, which is prana, is to master the breath, the mind, the body, all knowledge and power, and life and death. From ego consciousness to casual consciousness and higher, one must go through the awareness and mastery of prana.
Prana is supplied in water food air and solar energy. Excess prana is stored in brain and nerve centers. There is cosmic prana and pinda prana or individual prana. Prana is expended by thinking, willing, acting, moving etc.
Through pranayama yogis can absorb many times more prana from the cosmic and use that energy to rejuvenate and regenerate the spine and brain. The spine and brain are magnetized and draw more energy through the medulla and further pull in prana from the heart, lungs and senses.
The body is electrified in a state of perfect suspended animation. So breathing becomes unnecessary. The prana in the body is freed to unite with higher centers of divine consciousness in the spine and brain, further revivifying the charkas and body plexus.
In the breathless or semi-breathless state when the yogi can move the currents without the agency of breath regulation, the real Raja Yoga Kriya Breath commences. So the physical regulation of prana can be dispensed with.
Mastery of prana is achieved only after many lifetimes of devoted practice of pranayama.
