4. Although a residential colony of R.T, (Agra branch) had grown up called Soamibagh, when Anand Swarup became master he started his own colony nearby called Dayalbagh. which grew to 12,000 and became a prosperous industrial community, manufacturing toiletries, footwear etc. For this, he was knighted.

5. Anand Swarup's successor, Mehta, was an engineer who at first developed and expanded Dayalbagh but after India's independence it stagnated. His critics say he put too much emphasis on economic development and ignored the spiritual side of the community, and when some of his sayings were published after his death in 1975 they reflected this, being concerned with organisational issues.

RADHASOAMI DAYAL BAGH

The Dayal Bagh branch was founded by a defecting satsangi, Kamta Prasad Sinha at Ghazipur in 1907. Sinha's successor, Anand Swarup moved the group's head-quarters to Agra in 1913 to its present location directly across the road from the original foundation at Soami Bagh. This move was interpreted perhaps correctly by the parent group as a preliminary to a take-over bid for the original Radha Soami properties, including the Samadh or shrine and tomb of Soamiji Maharaj (5). What one witnesses today are two rival groups holding large residential colonies on opposite sides of the road of an Agra suburb. Each has shops, post office and even a bank - in addition to its religious buildings, its clean streets and alleys, well-built houses and neatly laid out gardens. The Dayal Bagh compound however, has a more developed infrastructure of craft workshops, schools and hostels for students and workers.

Evening satsang at Dayal Bagh takes place a little later than at Soami Bagh. Several hundred people from a young age cohort hurried to claim their seats in the large satsang hall in which a schola was chanting energetically in well-disciplined unison. The grounds were stewarded by men in red pullovers armed with lathis. As I removed my sandals at the entrance, I was called aside by one of these and denied entrance on the basis that I had not been initiated. Prior to being escorted from the grounds, I was allowed to view a white Ambassador car as it conveyed the guru between the satsang hall and his residence. As it drove slowly by, disciples clapped and cheered.

My experience at Dayal Bagh left me uneasy and a little angy at being refused admission by stick-wielding guards. It also lends credibility in my eyes to accounts in Soami Bagh literature of the relationship between the neighbouring groups over the past 90 years or so. Incidents of trespass, forcible entry and violence against Saomi Bagh property and personnel by adherents of Dayal Bagh in 1922, 1923, 1927 have been alleged (6). In connection with these incidents there has been on-going litigation between the parties.
