it is not necessary to go through inner planes to realize the truth. It can be done in a heartbeat walking down a street.

If truth means nothing but a mind empty of thought then you may be right.

But those spiritual planes seem to be higher rather than 'inner' or occult planes, starting with self-realization itself. This is evident from the Raghuvacharya incident mentioned in Journey to the Luminous. This saintly man had already accomplished the goal of Ashtanga yoga (Patanjali) when - at age 93 - he met Kirpal. He recounts:

"Before meeting Maharaj Ji [Kirpal] in 1948, I had, by rigorous practice of Patanjali's Asthanga Yoga, traversed beyond the six chakras and inner stages up to Sahasrar - the Thousand Petalled Lotus of Light. Sahasrar is headquarters of the astral plane and the final stage of most forms of yoga. Other Yoga systems and their practitioners are unaware of the existence of anything beyond Brahm - the causal world, or second stage. Since meeting Master [Kirpal], he showered grace on this soul, taking it beyond what is possible through yoga."

Sri Aurobindo explained that it is impossible (!) to go beyond mind before first having passed through the realization of Self in its various aspects. After realizing Parabrahman it took him another 14 years of intense effort. One has to be able to freely ascend and descend on these planes before going beyond.

This is also confirmed in almost the same words by Jaimal Singh, guru of Huzur Sawan. According to Kirpal Jaimal was a great adept.

Even Nirbikalpa Samadhi is usually the fruit of decades of incessant spiritual endeavour, and not to be accomplished by crossing the street. Yogananda writes in his Gita that to get beyond Christ Consciousness and realize the formless Brahman is extremely difficult and does require decades of one-pointed intense sadhana and a spotless life of purity.

So this 'truth' that some people encounter while walking on the street must be something different. The way it is described makes it sound like an alternate mode of mental perception. The mind is put to rest and life goes on as before, but with less mental struggle, that's all. That is Zen-related, not yoga-related.

Perhaps Kriya Yoga can do justice to both, as in the beginning the 'process' side of it seems to be of a similar nature (deconditioning, purification).
