That is not quite true. Out of 24 tirthankaras, 19th tirthankar was a female named Mallinath.

here is the link of her biography.

plus, contrary to Buddha, Lord mahavir admitted women in his sangha without any fuss over being female or male. Actually, his first disciple after kaivalya was a woman. He established four kind of communities (chatur sangha) male monks (shramana), female monks (shramanika), lay males (shravakas) disciples, lay females (shravikas) disciples. If they do not establish this four-fold sangha, they cannot be called tirthankar.

Mahavir swami gave the ultimate knowlege of atmagnan (the knowledge of atma and anatma) irrespective of their gender difference and he had quite a few lay female disciples as much advanced as he was.

The difference crept in after his entering into parinirvana. As one can suspect, some of his esteemed disciples were from brahmin background and perheps they could not resist the existing influence of that time. and it is a highly debated controversy between two major sects of jainas.
