Subject: Great stuff on Kundalini impact

Friends,

I have just read a small book "Vishwamata Krishnabai (Some Glimpses)" on Mother Krishnabai, foremost disciple of Papa Ramdas. There are a number of fascinating and instructive passages on the subtle rise of Kundalini by stages in the course of sadhana, and the respective psychological or mental results. I will reproduce them below.

Ramdas/Krishnabai were doing japa, dhyana and seva, i.e. repetition of Name, contemplation on God, and selfless service -- but I feel that the issue of Kundalini rising is universal, and there are similar accounts from various paths. I remember Yogananda writing on the same topic too, in his Gita.

Great texts! May they be of help to interested readers.

-----------------------------------

To another who wanted to know about the awakening of the Kundalini Shakti and its rise from centre to centre, Mataji said, "In my case, I did not know about the rise of the Kundalini at all except in the last stage of my Sadhana. Only after I had attained Beloved Papa's Shashwat Swaroop, I knew about Kundalini's rise when Papa read out a book on this subject. Then I could understand the progress stage by stage and compared it to my mental condition at different times and took it that they might have been due to the rise of the Kundalini.

"When the Kundalini is asleep in the Muladhara Chakra, the person will be purely materialistic in his outlook. But, by the contact of a saint, the Kundalini is aroused and it rises to the next centre. Then, the person will have aspiration to lead a religious life, he may start visiting temples and will be seeking Satsang. When the Kundalini reaches the next centre, he will be more and more drawn towards Satsang, temples etc., and he will be desiring to practise Sadhana. In the fourth centre, which is called Anahata, the aspirant starts feeling that the Guru is his own and the Guru being everything and beyond everything, the aspirant will start getting a feeling that all those who are connected with the Guru are his own and this expands his vision. Up to this stage he has no idea of the Impersonal aspect of the Guru. But, when the power reaches the fifth Chakra, "Vishuddha," his mind is drawn to the Impersonal aspect of the Guru and he speaks largely of that aspect of the Guru or God. When the Kundalini reaches the Ajna Chakra the aspirant gets visions of God and his mind is drawn more and more towards the Impersonal aspect. Here the Sadhaka has to be very careful. He is likely to develop some Siddhis at this time. If he is enamoured of them and uses them, he will soon slide down. Instead, he should pray to the Guru not to tempt him with such occult powers, but take him directly to His eternal Being and Existence. The Guru from outside can direct the Sadhaka only up to this centre. Beyond this, the guidance comes from the Guru seated in the Sadhaka's heart. Beloved Papa used to warn me that crossing this centre was the most difficult part of the Sadhana. Of course, the Guru within will guide. I shall tell you what happened in my case.

"I had not sat for meditation till Beloved Papa told me that I should sit for it and he taught me how to sit in a particular posture. He used to question me everyday what experience I had. With extreme sorrow I had to confess that I had not experienced anything. Then Beloved Papa thought that the delay in my getting the experience was either because I was attached to Beloved Papa's form too much or I had moved my body when sitting in meditation. He asked me to cut off all attachment to his form and also to see that I sat erect and motionless while meditating. I was very much perturbed because of the delay in getting the experience. The next day I sat as instructed by Beloved Papa and by His Grace, during meditation I felt at the tip of the toes a sensation as if ants were creeping up. As this gradually spread upward, the affected lower limbs became numb, dead as it were. When this sensation reached the heart region, I felt a frightening shock. Beloved Papa had warned me that I might get afraid and that I should pray to the Guru to get over the fear and also assert my immortal nature. So I prayed to Beloved Papa. The fear then disappeared and a sort of joy welled up in my heart and I saw a light. Then I said to myself 'I am neither fear nor joy nor light. I am beyond all these.' Then the feelings of fear and joy and also the light disappeared. When the power rose above the neck all my thoughts ceased. The power reached Ajna and from there, by the Infinite Grace of Papa, it rose with more speed and brilliance than that of lightning. About the experience of that, nothing can be said except that I had indescribable bliss. The mind was not there to think of anything as it had dissolved in Beloved Papa's Eternal Being. I did not know how long I had remained in that state. When I came out of it to the consciousness of the external world, I felt that I was the universe and also beyond it."

Devotee: "Was it an experience that stayed with you permanently?"

Mataji: "Yes. But I had to go still beyond. I was in that state for several days and when I was coming to the awareness of the external world, I was doing Beloved Papa's service and also attending to the barest needs of my body and also those of others. All these I did indifferently. I did not find joy in the work. I wanted to remain oblivious of the world and the body as I experienced great joy in that state. Beloved Papa then repeatedly instructed me to practise Purushottama Yoga in which I would experience peace of the static state even when I was engrossed in work."

Devotee: "How long did you have to practise Purushottama Yoga and, what was the practice?"

Mataji: "The Sadhana was the same as before and I had to continue it for two years more."

Devotee: "What was your experience after two years? Was it a gradual development or a sudden experience?

Mataji: "It was gradual. The experience I gained and got established in, at the end of two years, was this. As I told you, in the beginning, I did not like to engage myself in any work and wanted to enjoy that static state always. Gradually I was able to experience the whole universe as myself and, therefore, while doing any work, I felt great happiness in movement, maintaining at the same time the bliss of the static state."

"What is your state now?"

"That, as I have already told you, I am one with Beloved Papa's Eternal Being and Existence and also I am one with His Universal manifestation. Yet, I am a child of my Eternal Beloved Papa."

-----------------------------------

I did not do any meditation until I had advanced to such an extent that the Kundalini had risen up to the Ajna Chakra. [...]

Kundalini, when in the Muladhara Chakra, is sleeping with face down. At this stage one is purely materialistic and has no desire for the higer values of life.

By the grace of our Beloved all-compassionate Papa, when the Kundalini awakens, one feels like going to holy places like temples etc., and also thinking of God. When Kundalini rises to the next chakra, the desire to visit temples and holy places becomes stronger. When it reaches the third chakra, i.e. navel centre, one desires for contact with a Guru, gets initiation from the Guru and progresses in Sadhana. At this stage, one develops also Ashta Bhavas - eight kinds of emotion like horripilation, weeping, laughing, trances etc. There is a danger of man mistaking these to be of the nature of higher experiences. He has to be careful to continue his Sadhana praying to the Sadguru to take him above the Ashta Bhavas to the experience of final merger in the Guru.

The next centre is the heart centre and when Kundalini comes here, the sadhaka develops more love towards all. Until now he was feeling that he was only the body and all those related to the body were his. Now he comes to feel that the Guru is his own and Guru being the Supreme Being whose form is the entire universe, all those in the universe are also his own.

The next is Vishuddha Chakra in the neck. Now the thought of the Nirguna aspect of the Guru becomes more and more intense.

From there Kundalini goes to the centre in the forehead which is called Ajna Chakra. Here the aspirant gets visions of his chosen deity, sees flashes of light and gets occult powers. Here he has to be very careful not to become a slave to the occult powers, which will be very tempting. He must pray intensely to the all-knowing Guru to give him the highest experience and not to make him satisfied with anything less. Up to this centre it is not very difficult for the Kundalini to rise. But from here to the next and topmost centre takes a long time and requires the help and blessings of the Guru.

From Ajna Chakra the Kundalini rises to the Sahasrara like a flash, as swift as lightning, even faster and brighter. But it should not be mistaken that it has any resemblance to the ordinary light. It cannot be explained. When, by the infinite mercy and grace of our all-loving Papa, Kundalini reaches the Sahasrara, the bliss experienced by the aspirant will be simply indescribable. Here he has merged his individuality in the Guru and has become one with Him. This state is called Nirvikalpa Samadhi.

[...] Before I was given that experience, I had a small vestige of the consciousness that I was in the body. After this experience when our Beloved Papa, the lover of His devotees, brought me back to the consciousness of the outer world, my experience was that I was the entire universe and, at the same time, transcendent. The individual had become universal. The peace and bliss experienced was indescribable. As I was conscious before that I was the body all the twenty-four hours, I had to be stabilized in the consciousness that I was the entire universe and beyond, all the twenty-four hours. I felt like sitting in that static state of Nirvikalpa Samadhi for longer hours instead of coming to the consciousness of the external world. But, our Beloved Papa, the Mother, made me come down as Nirvikalpa was not the final experience. I had to maintain that experience even while active in the world. For that a little more Sadhana was necessary. Gradually by the guidance and grace of Sadguru Beloved Papa, I got established in the Sahaja. Here, as I have already mentioned, my experience was that I was the entire universe and beyond. If there was any need to do some work, I did it as if I was doing it for myself.

-------------------

Whenever the mind gets distracted by any thought, pray to Papa immediately with all love and devotion, as a child to its divine mother, to take you beyond all such thoughts into His Eternal being. This will help the mind to become empty or blank, both sooner and oftener, during the waking state itself - a sign most desirable for progress. You should not become afraid of such blankness of the mind. It is not in one's hands to increase the duration or frequency of such occurences. As Sadhana progresses with all zeal and fervour, Papa out of His infinite mercy will Himself give you such experiences for longer and longer durations. Those experiences are necessary as a preparation for the final plunge into Nirvikalpa Samadhi to be one with your Eternal Being, when the Kundalini shoots up from Bhrukuti to Sahasrara, in the waking state itself. During the rise of the Kundalini from centre to centre, Samadhi can be got if desired but that will hinder your progress rather than make your progress faster. Hence from the very beginning you must pray to Papa incessantly not to make you go into Samadhi at any stage on the way but to take you beyond it and make you merge in Him alone. Papa will then, out of His compassion, see that you are not side-tracked on the way anywhere but march on straight unto Him.
