AfaIk you only have to buy the engine if you want to do a commercial stand-alone game. If we do a mod that requires doom3 to run we won´t have any legal problems. I don`t know about the modding opportunities of doom3. Quake had a lot of editors and so on, that made it really easy to do a mod of this game. But most of these editors were created after ID reales the source code of Quake (at least they did so with th 2nd part). I cant`t remember how long it took until tools and documentations were released. I haven`t found any editors yet and that is the only thing worrying me about doing a mod. I don`t want to get stuck, because I have to disassemble and try to understand the whole game (which is just way out of my skills). If there will be editors available, the only thing that speaks against doing a mod is flexibility. You have to stay within the boundaries of the engine. Concerning the looks that will surely not be a problem, because doom3 simply is state of the art technology. But what about the AI for example? Most of the enemies are scripted or pretty dumb. If we want the enemies in our game to be smart, we will have to do scripts for their actions, or we have to hope that there are possibillities to adjust the AI.
These are the only points that come to my mind if I think about the flaws of a doom3 mod. Nonetheless I am very happy with the choice of a doom3 mod, because I think it will spare us a whole lotta work and it simply looks really really good.
