There are thousands of fans and administrators of countless clubs that work for free, including some ex-NRL players.

In the long run, with his fruit shop bringing in his main income, it may even be a money-maker to play for free because of the goodwill created by such an act. I know if I was a Thirroul supporter and Smith played for free, that's where I'd be buying my fruit from now on.
