Smith To Sign With Knights

Tuesday, March 15, 2005 - Newcastle Knights

The Newcastle Knights have today come to terms with former St George Illawarra Dragon Craig Smith for a one year deal with the club.

It is expected that Smith, who has played over 90 games for Wigan in the last three seasons of the English Super League, will be available for the team’s round four clash against North Queensland in Townsville (the club has a bye in round three).

Speaking today, Smith said he was pleasantly surprised to find himself about to commence another season in the NRL.

“To be honest, when I returned from England I had, for all intents and purposes, finished my football career and I found that retirement is not all it’s cracked up to be,” he said.

“When the opportunity to play for the Knights came up out of the blue I was very chuffed and realised that this was a pretty special opportunity.”

“I then asked myself whether I still had the desire and competitive edge, and whether I thought I could compete at the top level. Once I’d answered yes to those questions it was a matter of whether the Knights were the team for me.”

“The thought of working alongside Andrew Johns and Danny Buderus is a very attractive one, as is the idea of playing a senior role in a fairly young forward pack.”

“At the moment I’m quite excited and I can’t wait to get stuck into it.”
