I was chatting to Ben Everill (who isn't with Collies now so he can concentrate on other things such as reffing) about this last year.

Like Uni, Collies have struggled with juniors as they have no suburban base. They have been working hard in an attempt to fill their junior ranks and this will hopefully result in an under eighteens team within the next couple of years.

What they spend on their first grade side may seem exessive when looking at that grade alone, but it is consistant with what they are doing in the juniors and people who can't afford their kids to play cause of costs have an opportunity at Collies and speak highly of their kids treatment.

If I had anything to do with the club, they would be sending reps to edmund rice and the other catholic schools to touch base with the catholic church, who orginally were who Collies represented. (CBC was collies original name and they were the team for graduates of Christian Bros College). With the College no longer operating they suffer the perception of a bunch of highly paid mercenarys playing for a couple of rich clubs (town and Bally), even as people are working behind the scenes to redress this situation.

With rumours about WIN #2 not being available, they should look at going back to their old home ground up at Keira. The issue of their small fan base is something they will have to look at at the same time.

Uni have done well to get St Pius as a junior club and this is something the Dogs should have done years ago. They are only just starting to initiate things such as this.

While it may be healthy for the comp as a whole to have a hated premier team everyone wants to knock off, it isn't healthy for such a great team to play in front of such few people. I hope that this premiership draws more to their games so the atmosphere reflects the high standard they produce on the paddock.
