Nine flee as loyalist gang storms house

Nine people have fled their homes in Carrickfergus after a gang of loyalists stormed a house and attacked a man.

The incident happened around 7pm on Saturday in the Thomas Street area of the town.

A gang of eight men smashed their way into the house and assaulted two men inside.

One of the men, a Catholic, was thrown through a front window onto the street. He suffered a broken nose, broken cheekbone and bruising. A second man was also set upon in the house.

Two children aged one and two were sleeping in an upstairs bedroom at the time.

Relatives living in the nearby Windmill estate were also attacked and forced to leave their home.

It is understood that the row broke out over a Celtic football poster and that loyalist paramilitaries may have been involved.

A sister of one of the victims, Laura Magill, described the incident as terrifying.

"These people came to the door and bullied their way in. They just ran in attacking everybody, breaking TVs, videos over my brother's head, chairs over his head, using cans to actually physically hurt them. The marks that are on them are unbelievable."

The house in Thomas Street was boarded up today and there was nobody staying there. Neighbours said the young family who lived in it had packed up and left last night.

One man, who did not wish to be named, spoke of his shock. "It's not the type of thing we want happening round here," he said.

Alliance councillor Sean Neeson said he was disgusted by the "level of intolerance that exists in Northern Ireland at this present time".
