Probe after homes damaged in oil tank fire
UTV NEWS 17th May 2005

Detailed examination of the scene of a fire on a County Antrim housing estate was being carried out today, to discover whether a blaze which badly damaged five houses was malicious.

The fire started in an oil tank at the rear of one house and spread to five more oil tanks in the gardens of neighbouring houses.

Four of the houses were badly damaged, together with the garage of the fifth.

Up to 20 homes at Brentwood Gardens in Antrim town were evacuated and, while no-one was injured, two pet dogs were killed.

The pets were in the rear garden of one of the homes and were unable to escape.

Thirty firefighters fought for hours to bring the blaze under control as it jumped from property to property, forcing a number of residents to seek temporary overnight accommodation.

Station officer Gary Davison said his crews were faced with a major fire at the back of one of the homes when they arrived.

He said: "A domestic oil tank was alight and it spread from one house to another.

"A total of five premises were involved, four houses badly damaged and the garage of another property."

When the fire crews discovered gas canisters stored in the garage they ordered the surrounding houses to be evacuated.
"In total two cul-de-sacs - about 20 homes - were evacuated," said Mr Davidson.

"We`re still trying to determine the cause of the fire and it`s under investigation."
