We have, at present a very strong Junior squad, stronger in numbers than for many years. Each member has their own individual strengths but one gymnast, Rachel Smith is a complete all round gymnast who has consistently been a champion and medal winner since she was 7/8 years old. Her apparatus handling is of the best and her routines are packed with risk. Yes she makes mistakes but so do all the others. At the British having finished out of the medals on day one, Rachel came back and deservedly won two individual medals on the second day. She has been a loyal and committed member of National squads for at least 7 years. Loyalty may not win medals but Rachel must feel devastated that this year she has missed out yet again on an important international tournament. The first control competition was the grades final and the 2nd was during a squad training at Lilleshal in November according to the BG selection policy. After what appeared to be a very good performance in the first, one can only assume that Rachel had a bad second control. Who knows? Also according to the selection policy three gymnasts will be selected with a 4th one being named as a non travelling reserve. Who will this be or have the rules been changed? Good luck to whoever represents GB in Australia. It will be a wonderful experience for them but my sympathy will be reserved for one gymnast who should, but will not be going.
