Times have changed.
There was a time when Womens Artistic Gymnasts did ballet for their floor and beam routines, but then came along gymnasts like Korbut who had the wow factor. The public loved it and the TV wanted it. So now there is no dance in artistic.
RG has changed so much in its history. Not long ago it was very balletic but the public don’t want to watch ballet and the TV companies don’t want to show it. We were about to go the same way as syncro swimming and get kicked out of the Olympics. Then along came gymnasts like Kabaeva who did handstands with her head sticking up between her legs – wow – the public loved it, the TV companies around the world woke up to RG. Wow - Cirque Du Soleil stuff.
When people watch RG now they see the backcatches, tight walkovers, close backbends etc, all seen in Disco Dancing not ballet and the music has changed accordingly. RG is still based in dance, but it’s no longer ballet.
