Subject: disaster

i could only stay for the first half of tonight's game against iona, due to a prior commitment.

it's the first game i've been to this year, after attending every home game at the harbor yard last year.

from what i can see, the team is no different than it was last year, except for a few small changes...

there is still NO offense.. no plays, no anything.. just a continual motion offense, which doesn't cut it at the college level. while han is very good with the ball, he needs to be cut loose a little bit. he needs to be made a focal point of the offense.. run some on the ball screens with him and terrence or dewitt. his talents as a PG can't be fully used as just one part of an equal 5 part offense.

mike VS hasn't improved at all. he is still one of the shakiest dribblers as a college guard i've ever seen, and he doesn't really bring anything to the table, since he seems afraid to shoot the basketball.

finally, coach timmy is still the same... not realizing that you CAN'T have 5 guys on the court at the same time who can't create any offense. mike VS, middleton, carter, herbie, and mamadou were on the court at one time together tonight. of course, carter ended up taking a three and two other jump shots (two of which he made)... but do we really want al carter taking 3 jumpers in a game, let alone 3 minutes?

just frustrated.. there were some bright spots, especially terrence creating his own shot, which was seemingly the only way the stags could score.

was anyone else there to add/subtract some stuff to/from this, or add the 2nd half report?

I will add something...you are crazy. Your opinion is obsolete and washed up.
Of course TT will be your bright spot...noone else ever has the ball.
Think what you want but MVS just had an off night...it happens...I am sure you can relate.
Han needs to be contained...he is a freshman plain and simple.
The funny thing is though...where were you the last four of five games when the kids played well together...waiting for your chance to bash everyone?

[> Some Quick Thoughts from Iona -- JoeStag, 08:32:32am 01/18/06 Wed, [1]

- Iona was more physical and quick than us at the guard. They were not going to let us beat them from the arc.

- They forced us to drive to the hoop, and only Todd was successful doing that. He played a great game offensively.

- Herbie was effective creating in the 2nd half, but MVS was shut down and Han was not effective offensively, but did make some nice passes

- They beat us on the 50-50 loose balls all night, either off rebounds or off the floor.

- Key part part of the game was letting them get up by double digits at teh end of the half. Giving a good team like Iona a lead like that on their home court was a killer. Both Todd and Max were out of heh game with 2 fouls at that point.

- We somewaht controlled Burtt and Soliver, but Wachsman and Bruin killed us.

- Max got 2 quick fouls in the first 2 minutes of the game, and with their defensive pressure on our guard, they took us right out of our game. We needed Max tonight, but even when he was in their he was not as effective as usual. Middleton did some good things, but was not as physical as he was against St Peters. Mamadou had some nice inside hoops, but struggled when he had to shoot with a hand in his face...... 3 air balls. Carter played good, and thats what we need from him off the bench.

- MVS was bottled up by Iona's quickness, and when he was open he looked like he rushed his shot, and was bothered by Ion's "D". We need MVS to score.

- We missed a few layups and FT's, and to beat or stay close to Iona we could not make those kind of mistakes.

- Bell played hard, and him and Burtt exchanged words after both pushed each other falling to the floor and had to be separated.

- Most of our offesne was Todd or Allen dribbling around picks and creating shots for themselves or others. Iona did the same thing with Burtt and Soliver, excpet they did a nice job passing it into Wachsmann and Burrt for easy hoops.

- We would need our frontcourt of Max- Mamadou-Middleton to play better and MVS to have his normal game to stay with Iona.

When Max went out with his 2nd, an already difficult task became impossible. Iona is a very good team, our never give up attitude stopped what could have been a 30 point rout. The better team won last night, a team with several strong 6'7" and 6'8" players who can make layups. Todd is very talented but while his numbers may go up, without help and an inside game, this team will be hard pressed to finish in the top 5 spots in the conference.

jougesguy, YOU NEED TO GO TO MORE GAMES BEFORE YOU CAN MAKE ANY OF THE COMMENTS YOU DID. THIS TEAM SHOWED NOTHING BUT GUTS AGAINST A TEAM THAT WAS BIGGER, STRONGER, QUICKER, MORE ATHELETIC AND HUNG IN TO BEAT THE SPREAD. WHAT THIS TEAM LACKS IN TALENT THEY MAKE UP WITH GRIT AND GUTS.

"THIS TEAM SHOWED NOTHING BUT GUTS AGAINST A TEAM THAT WAS BIGGER, STRONGER, QUICKER, MORE ATHELETIC "

So who is accountable for putting together a team that is smaller, weaker, slower and less athletic than a league rival?

Herbie continues to emerge as a ROY candidate with his 16 points effort last night (all during the second half). Jon continues his steady play with 8 points and 5 assists. We don't necessarily need Jon's scoring with Todd and Herbie, but, I would still like to see him return to his early season form. I love MVS, but, I am thinking it is best to have MVS as our sixth man providing instant offense off the bench. Todd, Herbie and Han should continue to emerge as our three headed monster as the season moves on...

MVS plays 30 min. and has a stat line of 0 pts. and 1 assist. Is that for real?

Yes, MVS had a bad night against Iona, but, did you also notice that he scored 16 against Rider, 16 against Niagara and 14 against St. Peter's. And did you notice that MVS is now shooting 50.8% from three point range for the season. Take away last night's ridiculous 4th road game in a week (who does the scheduling), and I would say MVS has put together a nice offensive stretch here...

Must of hit a nerve with somebody close to the player. I was just stating its hard to believe that anyone could play that many minutes and produce those numbers. MVS has been having a very solid year. Lets not all be so sensitive. By attacking todd who has been carrying us the last 6 games and osullivan who is seriously injured is twisted. These players are trying their best, lets support them.

Dont worry Mrs MVS everything will be alright. Your son is a big boy now, has to take the good with the bad. Dont blame everyone and everything for a bad day. And dont hide behind fake screen names, anyone can do that. Why dont you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills, you know the one, Dr.Everything will be are right. Maybe he can help.

it is for real...it was a bad game for him (the first this kid has had in a while)...off night...I laugh though because its funny to see so many doubting people out there when he is one of the more consistent shooters on the team (check the stats). It is the same thing with Bell, Han, Middleton, Max or Herbie (just wait till he has a bad game...hate to see what the members of this message board do then).
On a side note is anyone going to look into the fact that Todd is playing for himself, that MOS is MIA (lack of dedication or just lack of everything?) or just keep on looking at the easy target (one players bad game-lets be honest all the players share their spotlight in that category spearheaded by Todd) and not the big picture (working as a team to make eachother better to have a better season).

The point is stop beating a dead horse...next up is Marist on Friday.

You got to have some big you know whats to attack MOS who is out with a serious injury, thats a bold statement, espically when you are going to leave fake names like for real. The fact of the game last night was 38-24 Iona in the post. Of our 24 i bet 18 of them were by Todd. Maxwell was on another planet last night and there bigs killed us so i wouldnt really place a whole lot of blame on the guards this game.

Guys, grow up! Everyone know and then has a bad game...he played that many minutes for a reason, none of which most of you probably understand...not saying anything against anyone, but there are always something not everyone understands....mvs is in control, KNOWS THE PLAYS (even though many can't be run because most of the team does not, including seniors that are starting) lets the game come to him, is not a ball hog, should probably be getting at lestt 10-12 touches a game and can pass the ball....so if he had turnovers last night???was the players running the play they were suppose to???did they know the play???
you don't blame one person, if that is the case did anyone blame herbe when he threw the ball away at NIagara? does anyone blame todd, has anyone questioned his "D" in four years, or that's right he doesn't have to play==wrong you need 5 guys playing not 2 or 3 although a very good shooter, goes crazy and forgets that there are open players when 3 opposing players are on him? does han see the court-not entirely, does he knows the plays? there is more questions that should concern you then blaming one person for having an off night? mos injury? do, was he sick??? Dewitt? how many touches has he had? not many when you have todd and han together=no ball movement=really watch the game being played, bell was inserted into the line up last in the 4th period to shoot, guess what, han missed him? on purpose? didn't listen? who knows
Try to support the team, they are undersize, trying to do all they can.

All very valid points - Todd, although our go to guy, forces his shot to often when double teamed rather than kicking it out to the open man. If you saw the Canisius game, it was a perfect example of how a team can penetrate and then kick it out when the defense collapses. We seem to play a lot of one on one, rather than trusting each other and playing like a team.

I would be interested in your take on TOT and his game plan. Is he at fault with the game plan, or do you believe it is the execution of the game plan that is lacking, or a combination of both?

if players don't know the plays, that is ALL on the head coach

[> [> Re: Guards -- JoeStag, 12:55:37pm 01/18/06 Wed, [1]

First of all, MVS is critical to this team, as he has been our most consistent shooter and player thru-out the season. Iona was not giving him much room to shoot, and the ones he did have, he missed. That happens. He has made some huge shots for us both at Rider and St Peters. IMO, MVS should be shooting 12+ shots a game not just 7.

As far as Todd goes, he gets into a zone sometimes, and becomes unaware of open players at the arc. Big scorers sometimes do that, but Todd does need to kick it out more, like he did at St Peters. Last nights game we needed somebody to take it to the hoop, and Todd did that in a critical part of the 1st half. But once he starts to get doubled, he has to use the double team to his advantage and find the shooters.

But offense is not our problem, its mostly defense, and that is hard to tell whats not happening without reviewing video tape. From last night, I would say that Iona frontcourt players wer getting too good of position down low.... once that happened it was hard to stop them.

As

Todd is sensational when he gets into that "own the ball" zone and is scoring. When he can't find the hoop it's painful. But, no matter how you slice it, he kept the game interesting last night.

As far as MVS is concerned, all I see on the court is a dedicated, smart kid who wants to win. Everyone has a bad night. When he's sticking critical 3's I don't hear anyone complaining. And, at least you see some step change improvement year to year which cannot said for some of the seniors on this team for which we had high hopes 3 years ago.
