[> [> Some other highlights -- JoeStag, 10:08:39pm 01/05/06 Thu, [1]

- Announcers said Mamadou played and inspired game on defense and on the boards..... refferred to as a warrior.

- Solid game by Todd with 14. and a lot of big shots.

- Han's shot was the biggest as he hit it with 20 secs to go and us up by 1. In the previous possession he missed, so great that he had enough confidence (even as a frosh) to put it up again. 11 pts for the game.

- Middleton played played well but only about 8 minutes.

- Herbie was instant offense in first half with a couple of 3's

- MVS and bell hit clutch FT's down the stretch to seal it.

- Out defense still struggled from the arc. Siena was 10-19 from the arc.

- Siena played very well for about 30 minutes, but then fell apart with T/O's and some ill-advised shots by Tay Fisher.

- Mensah and Jordan know how to get to the FT line, and their frosh Hasbrouk was on fire to open the game, but then disapearred.

- Maxwell was teh ultimate Warrior tonight. In post game he said it was not his best game, but he battled and praised othjers like Mamadou, Todd, Han, Middleton and others. Made specific note of how tough Mamadou is.

In and amongst the 12 "highlights" you mention, did you somehow forget that Fairfield got back in the game becasue Kojo got hurt?

We get your point and agree that the loss of Kojo had a major impact on the game. Do you mind if we enjoy this one though? We haven't had too many thing to cheer about this year. Jeez...

You tend to forget that Bell had to leave the game in the second half after getting poked in the eye, replaced by Carter who provided no offense and promtly turned the ball over after getting tied up under the basket. Bell was shooting well tonight and played some good defense when he exited.

While the impact may not have been as great, it doesn't only work one way.

While its too bad Kojo went down the bottom line is Siena lost. There's no excuse. His loss hurt them but if they didn't give the ball away (they threw the ball out of bounds three times in the final 8 minutes) they would have won the game. There is also no excuse for the stags losing 7 games the first half of the season. Injuries and suspensions are part of the sport. What matters is the bottom line, the stags are 3-7 now and seem to be an improved team.

My observations on tonights game:
1) Middleton played well. Really well. He made a couple of tough shots. 8 minutes is too little for him. I don't see why he isn't getting more minutes
2) Maxwell makes this team so much better. He is one of the best offensive rebounders I have seen. He has a great vertical leaping ability. Its interesting to watch him in a crowd rebounding, you see maxwell's hands come out of the crowd and somehow he gets the ball and puts it back in. He had a very solid game yet hasn't completely shaken off the rust, he missed a couple of lay-ups. I still think his best games are ahead of him
3) Mamadou also played well. He had a couple of impressive steals.
4) MVS was off tonight. He missed quite a few open three point shots. He was however clutch with his free throws.
5) Bell played fine. Good game defensively, missed a couple of shots and stopped shooting. He also hit his free throws when it counted.
6) This was Todd's best home game. He missed a couple of easy buckets early but was good when it counted.
7) Han is the best player on this team. He plays within himself, doesn't overshoot but hits the shots that he takes.
8) Carter played as expected.

I really felt this team wasn't going to win tonight. They keep coming back and then missing the key shot that would tie or give them the lead. Ultimately they fought hard enough to win. There on a roll, 2 in a row :) Well, we can't get too excited but I'll take the win anytime. After all, win streaks have to start modestly.....

I think all MAAC games are going to be this tight. So we just got to win them..... its all about making plays and we did. We missed a lot without Maxwell, and that is certainly evident with his return.

RF, One question. Our defense.... hiw come we gave up so many 3's?????

The Siena players move the ball well and quickly and scored a number of three pointers while Fairfield played a zone.

Actually, JS Wayne and I were talking about this during halftime. The issue is the defense has been collapsing when the balls goes inside, leaving players wide open on the outside.

It seem to me that when the stags were without Maxwell and Mamadou, O'Toole's game plan was to have the entire defense collapse on an interior pass in order to help defend and to help rebound. Our opponents were then passing the ball out to a perimeter player for a wide open three. Fairfield did this quite a bit in the first half and got burned. They got away from this strategy in the second half.

Defensively the stags need to go back to having everyone play their man. With Maxwell and Mamadou in the middle, I think the guards are going to be able to stay at home a lot more on defense.

While Middleton lacks the defensive intensity of Mamadou, he does seem to have good rebounding and shot blocking abilities. He had two blocks tonight but did not receive credit because both blocks were on plays where the stags fouled.

Certainly Bell has had better games, but when you have 4 assists, only 1 TO, and hit the two most important free throws in a two point win, you deserve some credit. He also played good defense, and never hangs his head when things go bad. He is also the first to offer words of encouragement to the other players. As far as first half team defense, I thought a lot of their threes came because they broke our press, putting players out of position. Second half, more staight up man to man, plus better communicating did the trick!
