Subject: Strage Game Last Night

A strange game last night. Glad to see the stags got a win. I only listened to the final 8 minutes of the game but I think the stags won for one reason. Todd got smart and dished a pass to Herbie Allen rather than forcing a shot against the triple team. Key stats of the game. Todd 6 assists. Herbie Allen 5-5. Stags shoot 55% from three point land and 52% overall. Stags hit a team record 16 three pointers.

But the strangest stats are:

The stags only shot 37% from the Free throw line.
Stags made 0 free throws in the first 38 minutes.
Mike Bell leads the team with 4 rebounds
The forwards and centers Olgesby, Diakhate, Maxwell, Carter and Middleton combine for 7 points

If you provided me with any one of the above 4 stats I'd probably guess the Stags lost. These stats indicate a team that had no inside presence whatsoever. No rebounding, no inside scoring. Guard play carried the day. A real unusal game.

It will be interesting to see how this team does against Niagara. Maxwell has had career games against Niagara the last two years. Will they try to build the defense as rider did around stopping Maxwell or will Fairfield's hot outside shooting force Niagara into a different strategy? A 2-0 start to this road trip would do a lot for this teams confidence.

Fairfield would not have won last night had thompson not left the game for two minutes with a hang nail. During his absence, Fairfield went on a 3-0 run and that was the difference. The radio announcers failed to even mention Thompson's absence. You guys really didn't deserve this win.

Todd did play much smarter last night. He remained agressive in taking the ball to the basket, as he should, but instead of forcing the tough inside shot he learned to kick the ball out to open three point shooters including Herbie, MVS and Bell. That was the difference in the game down the stretch. Great all around performance for Todd!

What caused those stats was that Rider had the better frontcourt, and we had the superior backcourt. Plus all 4 of our frontcourt players were playing in Foul Trouble for most of the game. Rider kept on going inside, and did exploit that, but I do think we came up with critical stops everytime Rider cut it to 2-3.

But the most amazing stat was that Todd took 23 shots and did not go to the FT line. And he was attacking the hoop on many of those shots. Either the refs were not calling any foul or Rider was playing him too loose. Todd did have his way with Rider's backcourt.

I also thought our ball movement was very good with MVS, Herbie playng a key role there.

I have been critical of Todd for being too selfish with the basketball. But he derves praise for last night. I think his 6 assists, especially the assist on the Herbie Allen 3 that made the score 83-78, were a key reason the stags won.
