Subject: Iona Game - What type of team are we
In reply to: JoeStag 's message, "CT Post - Skinny on Iona game" on 08:18:41am 01/17/06 Tue,

Are we the 1-7 team that started the season or are we the 4-2 team since Max and Mamadou arrived and Middleton's continued improvment. If we are that 4-2 team then we should be able to play with Iona, and if we are shooting well have a chance to win.

Overall, Iona has been very good this year.... but its not like they have always played 2 great halves this year. They have had some great second halves, and are an explosive team. Iona has a lot of talent, but they have had this same talent for the last 3 years too. IMO, difference being in the past when things went bad, they kind of imploded. This year they seem to have the confidence and teamwork to overcome any obstacle.

IMO, our first goal is to control their 2 high scoring guards in Burtt and Soliver. They are both quick, good shooters and can take it to the hoop. We did a good defensive job on Clark of St peters but now we have 2 of them to stop. We have to match their quickness, so I would expect to see a lot of Herbie again tonight. Tough assignment for a frosh, but I feel has had enough of a intro to Division I, to play a big game. Herbie and Todd can match their quickness of Burtt and McCollough, but we also have to control the taller Soliver, so I expect MVS and Bell to get the call there.... unless MVS/Han plays Macoullough and Todd matches with Soliver. I am sure we will lay some zone too.

Upfront has a lot of 6-7ish type players in Wacshman, Bruin, and Springer (6-8), and 7-footer Kelly who would be a good/Interesting match-up with Middleton. Maxwell and Mamadou will battle defesnively, but I think we need Max to stay out of foul trouble to have a chance.

What do we have to do to win...... its the same as every game, play good enough "D" so we can out shoot them. Which will be tough because Iona is a good shooting team too. But we have beat them 6 times in a row, and agaisnt their 4 seniors..... twice without Gai and once without Todd. How did we do that. IMO, both Kudjo and Goode harrassed their guards and made them uncomfortable. IMO, we cannot let Burtt and Soliver have their way or it will be a long night. And its not just from a scoring perspective as both are good passers, especially Soliver.

Stags need to play just a wee bit more of defense and to shot lights out from three point range to stay in this one. I actuallly believe we matchup well against the Gaels. Herbie showed his metal guarding KeeKee the other night and will draw Burtt, while Todd and Bell will take turns guarding Soliver. The advantage obviously goes to Iona, but, I think the Stags guards will do better than expected defensively.

According to Sports Network,

With the way Fairfield has struggled defensively, combined with the offensive firepower that Iona possesses, this game could get out of hand quickly. Expect the Gaels to jump out to an early lead and never look back.

Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Iona 87, Fairfield 69

Iona has better guards and centers The only position where FF has an advantage is with Maxwell. I don't think you guys can stop the Gaels from scoring.
