Subject: An Early Look at Cal Northridge

Cal Northridge is 5-4 after losing to Pepperdine last night 87-72. Their leading scorer was their 6-10 center Shewmake who scored 22pts. Before last night, he was averaging 6.9ppg and 7rpg and shooting 36% from the field with 1 assit and 18 trunovers in 21mpg. So it looks like he can be effective at times. Last year against us he scored zero points with 5 rebounds and 5 turnovers in 18 min.

6-5 Calivn Chitwood became eligible last night and was their 2nd leading scorer at 17pts. He scored 11 against us last year.

Their top scorer is 6-5 transfer Mike Efevberha who averages 23ppg, and his coache says "He has a chance to be one of the best scorers, one of the best offensive players, we've ever had,'' Braswell said. "He's really, really talented. I don't want to characterize him as a shooter or a slasher, because he does both. I would just say he's a great scorer.

And another 6-5 player Jonathan Heard, averages 11pg. I rememeber him from last year, he burned us for 11 points.

Cal Northridge plays about 11 players, and most of the other players are in the 6-5 range. I remember them being very athletic and strong defensively. They do have a 5-10 pg, Bakari Althehimer, who plays a lot of minutes and has a good assist to turnover ratio, but does not score much (2.6ppg)

If they are like last year, they came out and took a quick lead on us by making a defensive statement, we then we turned the game around and took a 9 point half time lead with a defensive statement of our own. The game was physical, and I would expect they play the same style, especially with a bunch of athletic 6-5 players. IMO, to have a chance to beat them on the road, we need our defensive issues to be corrected with continued improvement from Middleton, and we need to match their athletic/physical play with Max and Mamadou, our 6-5 athletic/physical players. That might be a lot to ask for Max and Mamadou's 1st game back

I found these tidbits on Foxsports...

Fairfield KEYS: Look for Tom O'Toole to really punish these kids, trying to get them to work before the travel west after the holiday.

Northridge KEYS: Both of these games are winnable (i.e., Pepperdine & Fairfield), but Northridge must find second and third scoring options behind Efevberha because teams are going to start running box-and-ones and double teams on the conference's leading scorer. And several of the Matadors need to be taking smarter shots, too.
