There is a lot of negativity in Stagland right now, and much of it is in my opinion reactionary. I prediced the stags would finish out of conference with either a 1-8 or 2-7 record. That was before Marty went down. I'm not a profit, many other posters felt this way as well. So why all the panic with what we have done so far. It should have been expected. In my estimation there have been too bad losses to date, St. Francis and Loyola. Other than that this team has done as expected.

This team will improve during the Maac portion of the schedule. Do I think 2-7 is acceptable. NO. But it is reality based on the player injuries and absences.

The stags could have easily been 4-5 with Dewitt Maxwell. He could have been the difference in the providence, Loyola and St. Francis games. This team has too much talent to finish with less than 10 wins as some are expecting. They placed tough in Iowa. They played tough against providence. Here's why I'm still positive:

Dewitt Maxwell is an all all maac first or second team player. If he comes back he will have a real impact on the club.
Jon Han is the best recruite we have had since Shannon Bowman.
Todd has shown he is too good a player to play as bad as he has so far this year. He'll pick thing up in Maac play.
MVS is a different and far better player this year. He is playing with confidence. He hits his foul shots and doesn't turn the ball over. He is shooting for a high percentage.
Middleton is looking very functional at Center.

This team is a dominant center away from contending for the Maac championship. This is not a bad team and they will show it during the second half.

I know many of you are going to say I am delusional. On the contrary, I think anyone who thought we could go 4-5 or 5-4 with this team versus this schedule is delusional.

I do expect more from Fairfield than 500 seasons. Last year was a huge disappointment and so far this year has been as well. So while I am disappointed with the year so far, I am not ready to jump off a bridge. The sky is not falling. This team will win more games than they loose in Maac play.

RF,

I somewhat agree with your optomistic attitude concerning league play. However, is it too much to expect a program to be a continuing contendor in a weak conference, rather than a very occassional one?

I agree When the Stags Come Marching In...

From a short term perspective, I can understand the results given the loss of Dewitt and the injury to Marty. But even then, the effort was not there the other night against Fordham, which in my mind is the sign of an emotionally broken team.

From a long term perspective, there is alot to be concerned about with a few positives. Beginning with the positives, Jon Han has already proven himself; Greg Nero is a big time recruit for us; and Fr. Von Arx and Mark Reed appear to understand what it is going to take to elevate the basketball program.

However, the momentum of the program appears to be in reverse. Our lackluster performance over the past couple of years (yes, .500 last year was very disappointing!!!) has not lead to our building a strong local fanbase including student body support resulting in the AHY being typically 50% and the other night 30% full. No matter what happens with the AHY, we are stuck there because Alumni Hall is completely inadequate leaving us a difficult situation no matter which way we go. The investigation and ghosts of disgruntled players past still hang over the program resulting in local recruits looking elsewhere (e.g., Trimboli at Vermont, Sullivan at BU, etc.) and locals fans having a negative perception about the program. I am not sure what it is going to take to reverse the direction of the program in a dramatic fashion, but, a breath of fresh air is sorely needed.

Stags come marching in stated, "However, is it too much to expect a program to be a continuing contender in a weak conference, rather than a very occassional one?"

I do consider us as contending in this league pretty consistently of late. A top 4 league finish is what I consider a contender, and we've been there.

I think it all comes down to the OOC schedule. JoeStag, what is TOT's OOC record since he's come on board? Obviously many think that the OOC schedule brings in recruits for us, but does that outweigh a record that could have 4 more wins each year if we schedule lesser opponents? I don't know, but I think TOT's overall record would be much better. Would you rather be 19-11 with a weak OOC or 15-15 with a tough OOC? I'm not sure which I like better.
