It was a winnable game but I am still optimistic about this season. I like the passion and determination of Han and that will be a catalyst as the season unfolds. MOS and/or Max should be the difference in '06.
I will reserve judgement on TOT until I see what he does in recruiting this Spring. Everyone on the planet knows what we need. He has proven that he can get good talent in Han, but can he do it consistently at a high level? We have such a glaring weakness at center. He absolutely has to snag someone who can intimidate and contribute right away. What a shame if we fail to attract a high caliber center to team with Han in his time at Fairfield. As I stated in an earlier post, any skilled big man has to be crazy not to consider Fairfield -- a fantastic opportunity to star from Day 1. That has to be TOT's highest priority. Han alone will get us some decent winning seasons but, to finally get noticed, we need all of the pieces in place at the same time.

Actually, any big man has to be crazy to consider Fairfield, even with Han.
O'Toole simply has no idea of what to do with a big man. Thompson only got the minutes he needed because Gai was injured. Gai really showed little or no development under O'Toole. Middleton gets no time even though we are fielding a team smaller than a large Connecticut high school team.

Interesting stat from last night...
Geoff had 5 rebounds (2 offensive) in 11 mintues while Alvin had 4 in 34 minutes. I love Al hustle, but, is Geoff being underutilized?!?! He certainly is delivering what is being asked out him...rebounds and defense.

It is foolish to say that Thomson neither played nor prospered at Fairfield. He got plenty of minutes from freshman year on and was heartily criticized on this board for much of his career. He developed tremendously his senior year into one of the best big men at any mid-major in the country. Did that happen by magic?
As for Gai, he didn't grow the way any of us expected. If we blame Fairfield coaching for that then we must conclude as well that the staff of the 76ers is no better.
On Middleton vs. Carter, from watching the Loyola game I'm not sure that Middleton has the stamina to play more than he has thus far. We all hope that he can take over at center. Of course, a few weeks ago most posters on this board were wondering why he is even playing Division I.

He developed when O'Toole was forced to play him full time when Gai was injured. O'Toole was forced to play him!

This is what I have seen as well. Look at Geoff's RPM number and BPM (Rebounds and blocks per minute). Alvin pales by comparison. I love what Alvin Carter has done for this team. But I said it three weeks ago, and I'll say it again. With Mary out the Stags have only one legimate center and that is Middleton. Middleton needs to get his minutes and grow into the job. I think about when the stags had Andy Woodli at Center when Groomos went down. He played their because he was the only option we had. Geoff has more potential than Woodley had. He is bigger, has some inate shoot blocking skills, and although he has no post moves whatsoever, he seems to be a pretty decent shooter facing the basket. So I still see upside potential in Middleton. He is a sophomore who will only get better.
To those who say players don't develop under TOT. I say look at Goode and Carter. Did anyone believe Goode would become the player he became. Five years ago did anyone really think Carter what good more than two minutes of playing time per game. I think it is possible for players to develope and improve. Some do and some don't. The coaches do not deserve all the credit or the blame for this.
I like Carter a lot. I like his heart and his hustle. I think he has worked hard and developed in to a legimate division one player. That being said, I think O'toole needs to give more playing time to middleton and less to Carter. Carter is 6'4". He should be playing powerforward not center. For that matter if MOS he should play the 4 as well. The only legimate center on this club is Middleton and I think he should be seeing more than 25 minutes per game at this position.

I think TOT sees a lot of himself in Carter. Same style of play.

Red Rugger- I think you are absolutely right. And I think it may be at the core of why O'Toole was a very good player but not a very good coach.

I think TOT also saw himself in Goode. I felt Goode had a role on the team but was a liability in some situations, but TOT continued to leave him on the floor at times where he didn't belong there. How many times were the stags down three with the ball and Goode was in there. He was 5'5 and couldn't create his own shot. The stags were working for the final shot playing 4 on 5. Goode could do some things for you but asking him to score in such a situation was not fair.
The truth is it seems, Tim judges people by their work ethic, heart, attitude and hustle and less by their innate abilities. I think Tim needs to look at the basketball skill of some of the folks he has put on the floor. Carter and Goode were not really recruited by anyone other than Fairfield. There is a reason for this. I think both players were stand up guys and good to have in the program. But folks like this should be playing a supporting role, not be the go to guys. Carter should be a back-up Powerforward who gets 15 minutes per game. Asking him to play center is not fair. The guy has no chance against a 6'9 player no less against some of the seven footers he's going to see this year. We're asking the impossible from this kid just like we did from Goode.
Players need to be used properly. We can't cloud our judgements about the abilities of some folks just because they have a lot of heart. The bottom line is, people need to have a certain amount of ability to go along with the hustle. In the tot era, we haven't always had the best players on the floor.
