Subject: Providence Report – Blue Ribbon Preview

Providence has beat Vermont by 10 and New Hampshire by 25, both at home. Providence goes 7 deep, 3 of those are frosh and are very good. McGrath is their senior guard at 6-4 and averages 15ppg, but the big stat comes from 6-11 Randall Hanke who is averaging 20ppg in 25mpg……. And get this, he is shooting 90% from the floor (18-20), and all are not put-backs as he has 9 O-boards and has made 18 baskets. Here are Blue Ribbon’s Preview comments on some of their players:

McGrath will again run the point, bringing his secure ball-handling and good decision making to the equation. The 6-4 senior (9.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 3.8 apg) must become a bigger producer in every category this season after Gomes' departure. McGrath made 41.1 percent of his three-point tries. "We need him to create more," Welsh said. "He shot the ball well last year, and I think he'll come out firing this year. We may even slide him to the two spot at times."

When that happens, expect to see Sharaud Curry, a freshman who is generously listed at 5-10 -- "He's more like 5-8 or 5-9," Welsh said -- at the point. Curry averaged 21 points and seven assists as a senior at Wheeler High School in Gainesville, Ga., and led his team to a pair of AAAAA state titles. He is a big-time recruit who will have an immediate impact. "He's jet quick and has a little medium game," Welsh said. "He really gets things done. He has something of a quirky game, but he can shoot it. He gets into cracks in the defense."

6-5 Weyinmi Efejuku, who averaged 18 points, four rebounds and seven assists last year at Brewster (Mass.) Academy after a productive career at Rice High School in New York City. Efejuku is an off-guard who can also handle the ball. "He's quick with the ball and can get out and run."

The most productive forward line returnee is 6-11 sophomore center Randall Hanke (6.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.1 bpg). His numbers don't demonstrate how much progress Hanke made at the end of the season, when he scored 17 or more points in three of the Friars' final four games. Hanke set a single-season field goal percentage mark by making an improbable 72.2 percent of his tries. Over PC's final six games, Hanke averaged 14.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.8 blocks. Clearly, he has the potential to be something special. "He's got to stay out of foul trouble," Welsh said. "He only averaged 24 minutes a game during that stretch. He showed a little foul line jumper at the end of the year. He has a good body and great feel for the game. He's an old-time lefty inside."

6-10 junior Herbert Hill (4.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg) in a solid power plant. Hill impressed last season against Connecticut with 15 points and nine rebounds. He needs to become a more effective rebounder, but he does have a good jump hook and the ability to finish close to the hoop.

6-6 sophomore Charles Burch, who also gained more playing time late last year. Welsh calls him a "glue guy" who should find his way into the rotation.

6-7, 230-pound freshman Geoff McDermott, who averaged 19.8 points and 11.5 rebounds last year at New Rochelle (N.Y.) High School. McDermott was thought by many to be headed for football, after being recruited by many major programs as a tight end and defensive end. But Providence stayed with him, and when McDermott decided to play hoops was able to fend off other challengers. "He's a big man who can handle the ball well," Welsh said. "He can play all night, score just six points and dominate the game. He can rebound, defend and is tough."

The scariest thing I see so far is that Randall Hanke - how does he make so many shots, and how is Fairfield going to contain this guy?

McDermott and Efeyuku are the freshman getting a lot of playing time and averaging double figures. Along with Hanke and McGrath, the other players with a lot of time are Hill and Curry. This should be an interesting team to watch tonight.

I beleive that Hanke made an unofficial visit to Fairfield on his way up to his Boston College visit a few years ago. I think he ended up decideing between PC and BC.

I saw him play a few times last year and he was a different player from the beginning to end of the season. Very similar to how former Stag Pete Debisschop progressed during his Junior year.

Last year, Hanke shot 72% from the field and shot 66% from the FT line. This year Hanke is 57% from the FT line. So I would think that we need to keep a body on him, and maybe play a little Hack-a-Hanke and send him to the line. Hanke's profile on the Providence website says he is a 0 (zero) handicap in Golf...... no wonder he is so accurrate on his shot.

Looks like Providence has some really good frosh, along with the good shooting Mcgrath, so it looks like we have to play everyone straight up. I assume the 5-10 Curry will be pressuring Jon Han all night.
