Here is better example from are very own SID. While obviously catered to the Fairfield audience, you can get a sense of how a writer can have a dramatic impact on the tone of article. While telling us about the score of the game, the tone is more postive. Words and phrases such "drubs," "kind of game that was all but over 30 minutes," and "superiority" are overly negative towards the Stags and borderline malicious and mean-spirited!!!
Stags Strong Effort Not Enough In 4-0 NCAA Tournament Loss To #10 Duke

New Haven, Conn. - The Fairfield University women's soccer fell 4-0 to 10th ranked Duke University at Soccer-Lacrosse Field on the campus of Yale University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Stags finished their season with a 10-7-3 record, as champions of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
Fairfield withstood the heavy Blue Devil attack for the first 42 minutes, but could not hold them off in the final minutes of the first half. Duke's Rebekah Ferguson knocked home a corner kick at 42:23 to score the eventual game-winner.
Stags goalkeeper Brett Maron made seven saves in the first half. She finished the game with 10 saves.
Fairfield was making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance, but the first since 1999.
Duke added three goals in the second half of the contest, advancing to the second round, to face the winner of the match between Yale and Central Connecticut.

I totally disagree. You can't compare a college SID with a local newspaper reporter. The reporter's job is to write what he saw, not to put a "positive tone" on a game. Casavant wrote what was apparent to all who were there. Why should those who were not there be told something else?

we would all like to see stories about the Stags only written in a positive light -- Casavant gives credit to Fairfield in the story about playing well --- but i was there. There was abour a 3-4 minute stretch in the second half where the Stags maintained the ball, but Duke was dominating -- 4-0 is a drubbing in soccer - even though i think two of the goals were soft - but count none the less.
The difference between the MAAC and the ACC isnt the first 11 (in soccers case) it is the next 10... what basically happened yesterday was that Duke had 5-6 subs that gave them fresh legs as the first half wound down and the capitilized... similiar in the second half when they were able to sub more often. Tough for a MAAC team to get that deep with their lack of scholarship money and other recruiting advantages.
I think the STags had a good showing - despite the final outcome - have nothing to hang their heads about - but neither can I fault the Conn. Post story in this case -- though I am sure in the future we will be able to.
