I started watching Lost, but I'm prone to chase/claustrophobia thriller nightmares, so I had to stop. I loved Carnivale last season, but don't have HBO anymore -- is it still good? I like Without a Trace and the new Numb3rs (I'm a sucker for genius types and this one is cute -- anyone know if he is the guy that used to play Billy on Six Feet Under?).
But the most amusing soap opera I've been following lately is the subdivision next door (St. James' Place). In the past few months the storylines have included:
1. adultery -- the woman everyone hates because she is always impeccably dressed when she walks the dog is apparently trying to trade up by going after a man at The Estates.
2. racism -- the local public school is overcrowded, so they are building a new elementary school. Until it is completed, half of the kids will be bused to a temporary school in a historic building in an African American part of town. Said section of town has been accused of having "hails of bullets," "12 registered sex offenders and child kidnappers," and "asbestos". But the parents leading the crusade against the relocation (all living in St. James)deny that race plays any part in their action. Amusingly enough, they went to The Estates to get their petition signed, and the parents there looked at them confused and said "but we send our kids to private school."
3. Health crises -- my friend Trude has been blackballed because she unknowingly brought her daughter to a party when she had an infection of hand, foot, mouth. Six months later, she overheard a mom say "Hide your kids, Trude and Amelia are coming by."
4. Bad parties -- things apparently got out of hand when a stripper was bought for a coed 10th anniversary party. Note that said stripper was okayed by the wife.
I've also been reading a lot. I recommend Candyfreak by Steve Almond. Hysterically funny. And it started me on a candy odyssey -- have now tried GooGoo clusters, Cow Tales, Haviland Thin Mints, and Goetze's Caramel Creams for the first time. Am looking for Valomilks, Abba Zabba's, Idaho Spuds and Ice Cubes.
Anyone read anything good lately? Preferably nonfiction?
