I think that that this idea also illuminates the forgiveness that God extends to us. When your mother says "It's ok, I still love you," she's already forgiven you and removed all possibility of reciprocal violence. When we request forgiveness for our sins, are we not essentially for a non-reciprocal reaction from God to our violence against God? Aren't we asking Christ to take the same attitude towards us that he took on the cross, rejecting violence that might be called "merited" if any violence could be called that. So while we were talking about this reaction from a mother or from God being compared to the wrath of God, it also puts an end to reciprocal violence and offers the same "way out" that Christ offers to us on the cross.
