Great quote. For some reason I keep thinking of the movie The Guardian with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher (probably because I am very visual, and this was the first film example I could think of). I think there is a good example of someone getting the opposite reaction they wanted out of someone. The movie is about the U.S. Coast Guards. In one scene Kutcher’s character is trying to break all the swimming records that Costner’s character made. He is the stereotypical younger arrogant jock at the beginning who thinks that Costner is an old has-been. He expects Costner to get upset about getting his records beat by a younger guy but instead Costner praises him and keeps telling him to keep up the great work (he doesn’t care about the records as much as everyone else does). When he does this everyone is caught off guard, and you can tell they have the same reaction as a child being told “I still love you” by their parent. In the end, Kutcher realizes what great a “teacher” Costner was and obviously models himself after him.
