Yeah, I'm not sure that casting the first stone is ther hardest position to be in because of the lack of model, as you said Girard points out; rather, I think it is because of the potential issues that could crop up as a result of it. If you cast the first stone while everyone else remains indecisive in their actions, the entire crowd could turn on you just as easily, just like what happens if someone speaks up in favor of a sacrificial victim. Confusion takes over and so does indecisiveness. If you were to hold back and allow someone else to cast the first stone then you would be in the company of at least one other person and it is easier to act in the same way. The greater the number of people who join in, the easier it is to do because you are, I guess, 'less alone' in your actions than you would have been previously.

I think an individual's inability or difficulty in casting the first stone has more to do with the possible consequences should the situation change, and being part of the crowd not an oustider to it, than it does with not having a model to imitate as Girard suggests.
