Did he defend her? I don't think you could argue that. He never said she did correctly. He never made excuses for her. In fact, he never did anything that could be in any way construed as being on her side. So in this example, I believe he surely did remain passive.
By passive I mean that he is not playing a part of the mechanism. He never gives fuel for the crowd to stone her which is what they had tried to force him to do. He could have taken the side of the crowd in condemning her, but also if he provided any sort of defense for her he would be encouraging the crowd to unite against either her or him. They could say he is breaking the law for the sake of defending a guilty person. Even the adulteress might be taken in by this complaint of the crowd and rise to condemn him for alleged hypocrisy. Rather Christ does not do anything to provoke the crowd because is not actively choosing a side. He simply decides to redirect their thoughts to themselves. It's not really about the woman at all but the imminent crisis. Not being a part of the mechanism, he can disarm it.
