Subject: su legeis: you said it

When reading Luke's gospel narrative, we noted that Jesus, when answering Caiphas and Pilate's questions, only responded "You said it." Instead of provoking the violence of the mobs, Jesus casts the responsibility back in the face of his persecutors: You make this claim. I was reading the account of the Last Supper yesterday (in John, I think) and when Judas asks Jesus if he is the one who will betray him, Jesus responds "su legeis" (you said it). This time his answer functions in a slightly different manner. Now Jesus refuses to take the place of the one blaming Judas. Jesus could have easily incites the disciples to take Judas out and hang him in the courtyard, but Jesus refuses to even blame Judas. Judas may indeed betray Jesus, but Jesus does not annouce that Judas must necessarily be the one to do so. Jesus refuses to condemn, and, by doing so, he offers Judas a way out.
