What sparked my interest after having read all of the wonderful replies to this message was the idea that you introduced about self-induced unconsciousness. I'd like to expand upon this idea. I really think that you might have hit upon a point there. Perhaps acceptance of the mechanism, even though there might have been an awareness of it earlier, is a mode of self-induced unconsciousness. I can see this working. Many times people consciously forget about events or "ignore" parts of reality that they don't want to recognize. This gets into psychology here (of which I admittedly aren't an expert in and will thusly try to keep my points more general) but as far as I am aware this psychosis of consciously forgetting is a human way of coping with stressful or horrific events.
Now, I guess what I'm trying to say here is that I really think you've struck upon a strong proof for the unconscious mass of which Girard talks about. People can consciously ignore or reject seeing the actuality put in front of them. This really seems to help to give weight to the probability of the unconscious mass working in unity against a single victim, unaware of it's actions, and yet still following that sacrificial mechanism. Yes?
