Subject: High School Rivalry

As I was watching TV the other night, it struck me how often rivalries that occur in high school, especially between teenage girls is predicated upon similarities. Those girls presented as being arch rivals are often nearly identical in appearance and are often shown either trying to steal the others boyfriend or trying to gain more popularity than the other. In fact, on one episode of "8 Simple Rules" the oldest daughter Bridgette and her enemy are shown facing off, fighting over the same boy, and wearing the exact same clothing. I think it's interesting that from such an early age one can watch such a TV show or teenage movies with similar plots and recognize the rivalry between similar individuals without completely understanding the forces at work. Although I suppose it is not that different from being involved in such a rivalry and remaining unconscious of it.
