I guess I can see where he is coming from but I don’t agree with him. I think it’s okay to feel bad about something like the bombing of Dresden but not feeling guilty about it. It really isn’t his fault that Dresden was bombed but obviously if he openly admits this couldn’t you be seen as scapegoating the bombers as the “villains” in this situation. I don’t think this way of thinking is healthy because there are enough cases like Dresden to basically always feel guilty for something. Also, what does feeling guilty really do for anyone? It might make him feel better but it does not resolve anything. It’s like the temporary peace after the sacrifice. Also, when someone tries to victimize themselves it takes away from the real tragedy of what happened. I find it interesting though that he does not talk about being in a labor camp since it seems like that would be an easy way to make oneself the “victim”. I am not that familiar with Vonnegut so I am only responding to the information you gave in your post. The quote you give is really interesting. It is the righteous nation that carries the sins; this does not imply guilt. If anyone would feel guilty it would be the rest of the world.
