Perspective would be critical here. It's almost as if the revelation MUST come from an outsider, someone not bound by the memories of the past and the blind spots of the culture he is observing. The likelihood of revelation coming from the outside and being accepted seems small (in 'primitive' societies the outsider would be eaten and in our society he'd be scoffed at for reading too many books or told to be more tolerant). I think that what Bets describes here is part of the "blind spot" that not only makes one's own rivalries invisible, but also covers up sacrificial mechanisms within a community.
