Author: Kiernan
Subject: The Gospel of Judas

On pg. 246 of "Things Hidden," Girard discusses the peripheral quality of Judas's betrayal to Christ's crucifixion. He states, "The betrayal is not indispensable to the Crucifixion," and claims that the elevation of Judas's betrayal is a sacrificial reading, an attempt to avoid personal responsibility, to recognize that everyone helped (and helps) to kill Jesus. The recent popularity of such Gnostic gospels as "The Gospel of Judas" seems to point to this sacrificial reading. The Gospel of Judas claims that Christ told Judas to betray him. This simultaneously combines the sacrificial reading by which, if Judas is at fault, with a more insidious reading that God, at root, is at fault. This text ends up subtly alledging that God himself killed Christ as yet another sacrifice - another instance of the sacrificial reading. In this accusation, the author aligns himself with the position of Adam, who pushes blame onto Eve in an act of self-preservation but, in the end, blames God.
