Subject: Brideshead Revisited

Some of us are reading Brideshead Revisited for Dr. Whalen's class. As I was reading about Charles's attraction to Julia, some earlier passages came to mind.

First, from p. 75 and 76:

"Her voice was Sebastian's and his her way of speaking."
"Her dark hair was scarcely longer than Sebastian's, and it blew back from her forehead as his did; her eyes on the darkling road were his, but larger, her painted mouth was less friendly to the world."

These passages tempt us to believe that Charles falls in love with Julia as some sort of an extension of his deep friendship with Sebastian. That is, if he can't have one, the other will do.

But on p. 78, Sebastian says this about Julia:

"I don't think she cares for anyone much. I love her. She's so like me."

Later we learn from Charles that Sebastian is spoiled, that all his life he has been cared for and has never cared for anyone else. Therefore, his self-love is mediated by others, much the same as in our discussion of narcissism in children. Charles's desire for Julia, however, appears to be mediated through Sebastian, who loves her because she is like himself.
