Subject: Stage Direction and Doubleness

In Shakespeare, Dr. Smith mentioned that in Cymbeline, Clotin and Posthumus Leonatus often are played by the same actor because they never appear on stage at the same time. While surely a pragmatic move, I wonder how such a decision effects a reading of the doubleness in the play. Imogen is married to Leonatus, but her father hates him and sends him away. Her father urges her to love Clotin instead. As Clotin tries to imitate Leonatus to win Imogen's favor, they certainly become mimetic rivals. Clotin even wears Posthumus' baser garments in order to more closely resemble Posthumus. When Guilderius strikes off Clotin's head, Imogen mistakes Clotin for her husband. The doubleness and indistinction is very strong between the two men. Having one actor play both roles only increases this effect.
