Subject: Rivalry among the tribes

When Saul becomes king and David tries to compete with him for the throne, Saul certainly establishes a lot of tension between the tribe of Benjamin and the tribe of Judah (David's tribe). This continues after Saul's death when Ishbosheth tries to take the throne and David reigns in Hebron. It takes David 7 years to gain full control. Nonetheless, when the kingdom splits with the rebellion of Jeroboam, Benjamin, the tribe of the former king Saul, who ended his life fighting against David, is one of two tribes to stay with Judah (and Levi doesn't really count). Given their history of rivalry, I would have expected Benjamin to rebel first--to lead the rebellion away from Judah. Maybe they did it for practial reasons because they were so small, Judah was so large, and they lived so close. Nonetheless, Jeroboam's rebellion gives us an interesting conclusion to Saul's hatred for the house of David--things have ended more like the covenant between David and Jonathan: forever more the house of David and the house of Saul are conjoined together in Judah.
